Why Sandbanks works for watersports
The Sandbanks Peninsula separates Poole Harbour from Poole Bay. On the harbour side, large areas of relatively sheltered, shallow water are used for sailing, windsurfing, paddleboarding and other watersports. Whitley Lake beside Sandbanks is an established board-sailing area — parts can dry at low water.
On the seaward side, the open coastline of Poole Bay offers more exposed coastal conditions. That double aspect is unusual on the south coast and is why so many disciplines share a short stretch of peninsula.
Conditions are not always calm or straightforward. Wind, tide, weather, vessel traffic and exact location all matter. Treat the harbour and bay as working waters, not a theme park.
