Sandbanks is a prime coastal location on the south coast of England, near Poole in Dorset. The peninsula is surrounded by Poole Harbour on one side and Poole Bay on the other — a rare double aspect of sheltered water and open sea.
Over recent decades Sandbanks has become closely associated with waterside homes and a reputation for exclusivity. Beyond the headlines, it remains a place of beaches, sailing, harbour crossings and everyday coastal life.
Harbour and bay
Poole Harbour is a defining presence: shallow, expansive and busy with sailing and water sports. On the bay side, long stretches of sand connect Sandbanks eastwards towards Bournemouth. The peninsula’s south-west tip is home to the Sandbanks chain ferry, which crosses the harbour mouth to Shell Bay, with road access onwards to Studland, Swanage and the Isle of Purbeck.
Sandbanks sits between two waters — the calm breadth of the harbour and the open reach of Poole Bay.
Beaches and water sports
