The Saltwater Sauna, Sandbanks
Two wood-fired saunas sit tucked alongside the dunes on Sandbanks Beach — a short walk from the main car park, beside the volleyball nets, with the open water of Poole Bay immediately beyond.
Sessions last 65 minutes. Visitors alternate heat with an optional sea dip or cold beach shower, then change again within the booked time. It is a deliberately simple, off-grid beach setup rather than a spa complex.

The experience
A typical visit is a booked 65-minute session. Arrive for check-in, change into swimwear in the compact changing space, then settle into one of the two wood-fired saunas overlooking the bay.
Most visitors move between heat and cold — stepping out for a sea dip when conditions feel right, or using the cold beach shower as a simpler contrast — then returning to the sauna as they prefer. Leave enough time to change again before the session ends; changing is included within the booking.
This is a beach setting, not a spa day. Facilities are intentionally limited, the location is off-grid, and the appeal is the combination of wood heat, open air and immediate access to Sandbanks Beach.

What to expect
The Sandbanks site has two contemporary wood-fired Nordic saunas with panoramic windows facing the sea. Visitor reviews frequently highlight the setting and views, the hosts, the rhythm of sauna and sea dips, and the atmosphere of winter mornings or sunset sessions.
The saunas were handcrafted by Heartwood Saunas in Wales and designed for the British coastline. Official information describes sustainably sourced Nordic thermowood, FSC-certified timber benches, sheep’s-wool insulation, Finnish wood-fired stoves and large panoramic windows — a coastal build oriented to heat, weather and the view rather than a luxury spa interior.
Changing spaces are compact. Hooks and shelves are provided, but this is still a beach concession — bring only what you need and expect a simpler setup than an indoor spa.
Sea dip & cold shower
One reason people book Sandbanks is the contrast: warm wood-fired sauna, then a step onto the beach for a sea dip, or a cold beach shower if you prefer not to enter the water. Drinking water is available on site.
Sea conditions on Poole Bay change with weather, tide and season. Treat dipping as optional. Make your own assessment of conditions and follow operator guidance and local safety information. We do not make medical claims about sauna or cold-water immersion.

The saunas sit beside the dunes next to the beach volleyball nets. From Sandbanks Car Park on Banks Road (BH13 8QJ), it is about a 3-minute walk: go onto Sandbanks Beach and head towards Bournemouth.
Street parking along Banks Road may be available where restrictions permit, with beach access through the dunes. Nearest public toilets are near the main car park behind the beach office (BH13 7QQ).
Sandbanks parking can become extremely busy on fine-weather weekends and school holidays. Allow extra time and do not rely on finding a space at the last minute.
When to go
The same beach setting reads differently through the year. Crisp winter mornings emphasise heat and quiet sand; bright summer days put the sauna in the middle of a busy beach scene; sunset and evening sessions trade on the light over Poole Bay.
Sessions run at scheduled bookable times rather than as a walk-up all-day facility. We do not list fixed daily opening hours here — check live availability on the official booking system.
Who is it for?
Communal sessions suit individuals, couples and small groups who are happy to share. Private SMALL and BIG bookings suit friends or groups who want the sauna to themselves. Private guided rituals are available on request through the operator.
It is also a different way to use Sandbanks Beach — less about a long sunbathing stretch, more about a timed coastal ritual between harbour town and open bay. Current bookable communal and private sessions are listed as 16+.
About the Sandbanks sauna
Beach sauna on Sandbanks developed through a BCP Council concession process. A Sandbanks Beach Sauna service concession was awarded to The Saltwater Sauna for a two-year period beginning 1 April 2024. In September 2024, BCP Council’s Western Planning Committee granted planning permission for an extension to the existing Saltwater Sauna building at Sandbanks Promenade.
The Sandbanks site is the local focus of this guide. The operator has since developed a wider coastal presence elsewhere; for other locations and live trading details, use the official Saltwater Sauna website.
