Parking in Sandbanks can become extremely busy during warm weekends, school holidays, bank holidays and major events. The main beach car park is only one part of the local parking network, with additional off-street and on-street options across Sandbanks and Shore Road.

This guide explains the principal car parks, current published charges, on-street parking locations, accessible parking, alternative options and the latest enforcement rules.

Always check the sign beside the exact bay before leaving your vehicle. Local signs, temporary suspensions and official parking information take priority over this guide.

There are multiple formal paid parking areas across Sandbanks and Shore Road. Capacities below are published maxima, not live availability.

Current published winter position: generally free from 1 November to 14 March, and generally free after the daytime charging period. Always check the sign beside the bay.

Is there free parking in Sandbanks?

Free parking close to Sandbanks Beach is limited. The dedicated 12-space Shore Road disabled car park is currently listed as free. Some council on-street bays are also free outside their summer charging period, but restrictions vary by road.

Always check the sign beside the exact bay before leaving your vehicle.

Do not rely on “secret free parking”, unrestricted residential roads, or parking on verges. Winter free periods are not universal on every side street, and Blue Badge holders should not assume free parking in every off-street car park.

Parking legally and considerately

Local signs, road markings, suspended bays and temporary orders take priority. Double yellow lines prohibit waiting at any time even where there is no upright time plate.

Parking fines and vehicle removal

BCP Council can issue Penalty Charge Notices and remove illegally parked vehicles. Vehicles parked illegally, dangerously or obstructively may be towed away — this does not mean every illegally parked vehicle will be removed.

Towing is more likely where a vehicle obstructs traffic flow, emergency access, a junction, pavement or verge, interferes with buses, creates danger, prevents access, or sits on prohibited restrictions during high-pressure coastal days.

During one heavily enforced weekend in July 2025, more than 1,700 PCNs were reportedly issued across the BCP coastal area and dozens of vehicles were removed. This is attributed to local reporting and should not be read as Sandbanks-only activity. BBC News report (opens in a new tab)

Accessible parking in Sandbanks

Current published provision includes 11 disabled spaces in Sandbanks surface car park and 12 free dedicated disabled spaces at Shore Road disabled car park. Beach access and accessible toilet information should be checked before travelling.

The Blue Badge scheme is principally an on-street concession. Off-street car parks can apply separate rules. Badge holders may generally park on single or double yellow lines for up to 3 hours where no loading ban applies, provided the badge and clock are correctly displayed and the vehicle does not cause danger or obstruction. How to pay

Most Sandbanks parking locations support RingGo. BCP Council currently states that it does not charge a RingGo convenience fee at its pay-and-display locations, although optional services may carry an additional fee.

Payment methods vary by location. Sandbanks surface car park supports card, phone, cash and app. Many smaller on-street areas are phone/app only. Shore Road on-street parking may not accept cash. Check the machine, sign or app before leaving the vehicle.

Electric vehicle charging

Sandbanks surface car park currently lists 8 charging points. Do not treat charger availability as live.

BCP’s current council-wide published tariffs include rapid charging at 72p per kWh and fast charging at 56p per kWh. Confirm the charger type, operator and live information before travelling — do not assume a Sandbanks-specific tariff from the council-wide figures alone.

Motorcycles, motorhomes and coaches

Motorcycle spaces are published at Sandbanks surface car park (2) and Shore Road car park (1). Motorhomes are accepted vehicles at Sandbanks surface car park and Beach Road surface car park.

Accepting motorhomes does not mean overnight camping or sleeping is permitted. Visitors must follow current signs and parking orders. Coach parking and booking arrangements for Sandbanks surface car park are set out separately in the charges section above.

When does Sandbanks parking fill up?

Demand is strongest on warm weekends, school holidays, bank holidays, midday arrivals, major events, ferry disruption days, exceptional summer weather and high-UV beach days — especially when approaches through Poole and Canford Cliffs are congested.

Arrive earlier, allow extra time, do not rely on one car park, follow roadside signs, check ferry status, and consider bus, cycling, taxi or walking. Do not join or create obstructive queues, and do not stop illegally because a car park is full. Arriving at a particular time does not guarantee a space.

What to do if Sandbanks parking is full

The official named additional option is Beach Road surface car park (detailed above). Broader nearby alternatives sit outside the peninsula and should not be described as immediate Sandbanks parking. Onward walking, cycling, bus or taxi travel may be needed. Space is never guaranteed.

Parking and the Sandbanks Ferry

The ferry carries vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. Ferry queues can affect access to the peninsula, and disruption can increase congestion. Parking queues and ferry queues do not create permission to stop on restrictions or block side roads, driveways, junctions or local access.

    From 4 August to 31 August 2026, a higher-penalty trial applies in BCP Council’s mapped coastal enforcement area from Sandbanks to Southbourne. Trial PCNs include £110 (lower) and £160 (higher), with reduced amounts if paid within 14 days. These are time-limited trial tariffs, not permanent year-round charges.
